The Y-Chromosome can be termed the male chromosome as it is only found in males.  Females have an X chromosome paired with another X-chromosome; males an X-chromosome paired with a Y-chromosome.  Since the Y-chromosome only appears in males, it is an important chromosome when one wishes to track their ancestry through genetic testing.  Ancestry is mapped through what is known as Y-STR testing.  More information about this can be found on Relationship DNA Testing.
